As they say “The door to safety swings on the hinges of common sense." Sensible locks, lighting and landscaping, are security measures homeowners can take to protect their homes from theft. FBI reports indicate that a burglary occurs somewhere in the US every 15 seconds and 70% of those burglaries are happening to our homes. The summer season of July and August rank as having the highest theft rates. Easy access through defective door locks or old style windows occurs more often than most people think. The path of least resistance is the preferred choice and dimly lit homes with overgrown shrubs and foliage provide great escape routes. Perhaps an ounce of home maintenance protection is worth a pound of cure.
In a plodding economy, the threat of burglaries increases. Homeowners are working to minimize their risk and making their homes more secure and less attractive to burglars. Always lock your house when you go out, even if you expect to be gone just a short time. Take stock of your exterior doors including the one leading from your garage into your home. Secure sliding glass doors with bars or locks. Replace doors that are weakened through age or use. Review your windows, especially the ones on the ground level. New double-insulated windows with locks and pull out tabs increase security and will prove cost effective in the winter.
Exterior lighting is one of the easiest ways to ensure safety and deter theft. Well-lighted entrances, porch stoops and driveways deter those who don’t want to be seen. Your lighting should be bright enough to see from a distance of 100 feet (from the street). Motion sensor lights and timers can be installed to turn on interior and exterior lights while you are away.
Maintain shrubbery to prevent blockage of entrances, windows or exterior lights. Observe tree branches that come close to windows and arrange for their removal. Overgrown bushes also give the appearance of neglect or vacancy. Redesign of pathways can provide a more direct route from car to house and increase your home and personal security.
