Install Residentially Designed Retaining Walls Just like The Mennen Arena has done in Morristown, NJ

There weren't many April showers but we remember quite a few “deluges” that may have done some damage to our homes both inside and out. Now that the weather is great for outdoor entertaining, there may be a need to assess and repair what the rains have not washed away. The solution may lead to the design and hardscaping of retaining walls with the proper vegetation and planting.Curb Appeal Retaining Wall

Residential property slopes in many Essex and Morris County towns provide beautiful summertime views, but this leads to a need for some tough-love care to preserve its innate beauty. A drive through any neighborhood will identify cracked or bulging walls that have not met the challenge of holding back the hillside. The labor intensive job of hauling dirt around and cutting out the property “is not for the faint of heart” Mo Soliman of Curb Appeal Design cautions.

Changing a high sloped backyard into a terraced summer paradise, the retaining wall works to prevent water runoff of valuable topsoil especially when near the home. Too much soil loss can result in a foundation wall collapse or worse. These hard working retaining wall barriers undergo a constant battle with gravity every day. Even the smallest 18 inch to three foot wall can be handling an enormous load. Soliman agrees “When soil is saturated, the pressure on the wall is in the thousands of pounds range. Double the height and the wall must endure 8 times the load.”

A carefully engineered retaining wall is a masterpiece when finished. The most natural looking walls blend in to the landscape and environment with a feeling of having been there forever. There are many different styles or types to choose from according to your taste and budget. Materials range from mortarless interlocking fieldstone to poured concrete and everything in between. Segmented retaining wall blocks are very popular currently as are stones, boulders, bricks, treated wood and to a lesser scale railroad ties.

Once the walls are designed and constructed, choosing the proper vegetation is essential. The root system must be substantial as the right roots will also anchor the soil, but not to the point of disrupting the structural integrity of the wall. Low maintenance, low lying ground covers work well, ward off weeds and protect the soil against the sun's rays.

Soliman's Curb Appeal Design crew should know. They have designed and built hundreds of retaining walls in New Jersey. The Mennen Arena in Morristown now has a patio and retaining wall thanks to his generous donation of masonry materials and professional workmanship.
