Remediation of Home Disasters can be Restored after Storms & Hurricanes; Hurricane Irene caused Tremendous Home Damage
September 1, 2011 - Author: Patricia F. Mitrano
While waiting for the arrival of Hurricane Irene in New Jersey, if lucky enough to still have power, being glued to the news and following her path was all we could do. Unfortunately for many, the aftermath will be felt for a long time as the massive clean-up begins. Curb Appeal Designs extend our thoughts to those who have been affected by the storm and hope all are safe and would like to help by offering the following tips to start the recovery.
Remove all visible water through use of shop vacs, fans or dehumidifiers. Consult with electricians before attempting to turn power back on. Be aware of the opportunity for mold growth in drywall or any other porous surface. All affected items must be removed. Be mindful of the placement of debris outside your home as it may cause hazards.
As we have seen, water damage is a serious threat to homes causing structural, electrical and mold issues. Those spared this time have the opportunity to get projects off your to-do list before our next big storm. The presence of French drains, clean gutters and sump pumps (with back-up generators) may have weathered the storm slightly better than homes without.
Each home is unique and has its own flood prevention solutions and warrants individual review. Weather is a great metaphor for life - sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, and there's nothing much you can do about it but carry an umbrella. ~Terri Guillemets
